Introducing... New Kids on the Block
I’m sure everyone has had that “new kid on the block” feeling when starting a job. A few months ago, that was me, walking into Amazing Edibles for my first day. My name is Diedra, I joined the AE team as an Event Specialist in late October. I am still fairly new to the city of Chicago - I’m originally from Sarasota, Florida. I know you may be thinking, “who would move from sunny Florida to the Windy City?!” Like I tell everyone... I never saw it coming until two weeks beforehand. I was transferred by my old restaurant company. After I saw what this city had to offer, I knew I’d stay for awhile, and staying eventually led me to my new position at AE.
AE has challenged me to get out of my comfort zone of working in such fast paced environments. I have learned how to slow down a little and check every detail. The culture here is the complete opposite of what I am used to and I love it; it’s one of the best reasons for working here.
To my surprise, I wasn’t the only new person - I had Liz, Ellen, and Chef Eric! With the support of other new team members, my first day jitters slowly faded away. I checked in with my fellow “new kids” and asked them two questions: How does AE defer from your last position? What do you like most about working at AE?
Ellen
1) AE is completely the opposite of my last job in every way. For starters, I'm used to 100 dogs running around and barking. Here, even when the kitchen is cranking away, I think it is peaceful.
2) The management being so understanding and family oriented. When my daughter and I were sick during our busiest season, they understood and gave me time for her and I to recuperate.
Liz
1) Working at Amazing Edibles is very different from any of my previous positions in many ways. Most notably, my current position is centered on creative planning with constant client communication. My most recent position as GM (prior to joining AE) didn't always allow time for such an opportunity to build relationships with our guests.
2) Our work culture. It is refreshing to work in such a supportive environment that provides mentor-ship, accountability and a strong sense of community.
Chef Eric
1) I am thrilled to join the tight-knit Amazing Edibles team, so much so that I can barely contain my excitement as we plan for the year ahead! I'm most looking forward to drawing on all of my past experiences and unveiling a host of exciting and seasonal new ideas.
There is one big difference between Amazing Edibles and kitchens I've led in the past: the size of the team. This will be the largest team I have ever worked with, providing us with countless opportunities to bond over food as we create new dishes together.
2) My favorite part about working at AE is feeling supported by our incredible team. The company culture is second to none. I can't wait to continue this new adventure as we cater to Chicagoan’s from all walks of life!
With all the different backgrounds and fresh ideas that come along with being new makes a company stronger. I believe it’s safe to say, being new to the Amazing Edibles team doesn’t feel like you’re new for long, you feel like you are part of an amazing family and culture.
